Meet the Staff
Maribel Munoz, Assistant
Maribel Munoz began working as a dental assistant for Dr. Schultz in 2003. Without any prior dental training or experience, Maribel’s proficient yet gentle touch have been perfected on the job. She has attended a number of dental conferences and seminars sponsored by the American Dental Association and its local chapters enrich her dental knowledge. She’s also a member of the Association of Dental Implant Auxiliaries. Maribel’s favorite part of her job is having the opportunity to provide tender loving care to patients. In her spare time, she straps on her high heels and hits the dance floor with her husband and three beautiful daughters. Maribel makes the best guacamole this side of the border.
Abby Benin, Assistant
Abby moved to Juneau from the Philippines when she was eight years old. As a high school student, she had the opportunity to job shadow dental hygienists and quickly realized how interested she was in dentistry. She graduated from high school in the spring of 2012 and began attending UAS the following fall with the intention of becoming a dental hygienist. Abby began working as a dental assistant with Dr. Schultz in the summer of 2012. Her favorite part about the job is the valuable skills and experience she is gaining and the opportunity to work with such a friendly staff. When not working or in school, Abby enjoys cooking and being outside, hiking, kayaking and spending time with her friends and family.
Jana Pierce, Hygienist
Jana grew up in Colorado and received her Dental Hygienist degree from Colorado Northwestern Community College in May of 1999. She began working as a Registered Dental Hygienist for Southeast Dental Group in June of that year. She loves being a hygienist and the opportunity to get to know so many wonderful individuals and families over the years. She feels blessed to work for Dr. Schultz and can’t imagine working with any other team. Jana and her husband have four beautiful children. She enjoys digital scrapbooking, playing volleyball, supporting her kids in all their many activities, and spending time with friends and family.
Lena Merrell, Hygienist
Lena was raised in Alaska by her mother and traveled a lot as a child. She moved to Juneau when she was 9 and graduated from JDHS in 2000. Lena graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Vermont with a bachelors in Political Science. She quickly realized she wanted a different career and, by happenstance, was hired by Dr. Schultz in 2004 (who had been her dentist since opening the practice in 1998). Lena soon discovered that a career in dental hygiene was just what she was looking for and started taking prerequisites at UAS. Meanwhile, she got to see just how hard everyone in the office worked, spending time as a dental assistant, lab tech, surgery assistant and at the front desk.
Lena went back to the east coast to get her Associates in Dental Hygiene, with a puppy and a position at Southeast Dental. Getting a letter of acceptance to dental hygiene school still ranks as a top moment in her life (beat out only by being hired as a hygienist by Dr. Schultz 2.5 years later, getting engaged to her long time commercial fisherman boyfriend, and then getting married in Mexico in 2012).
Lena enjoys making her patients feel comfortable in the dental chair, and educating them about their dental health. When she is not at work, Lena likes going on adventures with her dog, husband or friends, hiking, camping, traveling, cooking and crafting.
